Malaysia: High Court issued interim injunction against Telegram and channels over spreading harmful content in violation of the Communications and Multimedia Act

Description

High Court issued interim injunction against Telegram and channels over spreading harmful content in violation of the Communications and Multimedia Act

On 19 June 2025, the Malaysian High Court issued an interim injunction in favour of the Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in civil proceedings against two Telegram channels, Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas, for allegedly spreading harmful content in violation of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. The ruling applies to Telegram as an application service provider class licensee, following its reported failure to respond to repeated notifications from MCMC. The MCMC obtained the injunction to restrict the circulation of the content and prevent its further dissemination, while allowing Telegram the opportunity to respond. MCMC noted the responsibility of all social media platforms to manage content and indicated that similar measures may be considered in other cases to safeguard public safety and order.
