Description

European Commission opened a consultation on classification of AI systems as high-risk

On 6 June 2025, the European Commission opened a consultation on the classification of AI systems as high-risk as part of the implementation of the AI Act’s rules for high-risk AI systems, until 18 July 2025. The consultation aims to collect information on practical examples of AI systems and issues to be clarified in the Commission’s forthcoming guidelines. These guidelines are required by the AI Act to specify the practical implementation of rules for classifying high-risk AI systems under Article 6 and the practical application of requirements for high-risk systems and operator obligations, including responsibilities along the AI value chain under Article 96(1)(a). Under the AI Act, high-risk AI systems, such as those systems affecting health, safety, or fundamental rights, must meet requirements on data, transparency, human oversight, and undergo conformity assessments.
