Act on parental consent and content restrictions for minors on social media (HB 6857) was introduced to Connecticut House of Representatives

On 5 February 2025, the Act Concerning the Attorney General's Recommendations Regarding Social Media and Minors (Raised Bill No. 6857) was introduced to the Connecticut House of Representatives. The Act would apply to operators of online platforms that recommend content based on user data and are likely to be accessed by users under 18. It would prohibit such platforms from displaying algorithmically selected content to minors without age verification or verifiable parental consent. The Act would also require immediate deletion of data collected for verification or consent and mandate default settings that limit recommended content exposure and restrict visibility of minors’ posts. Furthermore, Notifications related to recommended content may only be sent between 6 am and midnight (ET), unless otherwise authorised by a parent or guardian. in Addition, covered operators would be required to publish annual usage statistics and treat users as minors if they have actual knowledge of their age. Violations would be classified as unfair or deceptive trade practices enforceable by the Attorney General.
