Cyberspace Administration of China reported removal of 2'210 platform accounts for alleged online rumors related to public policies and emergencies

On 12 May 2025, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) reported on recent cases involving the creation and dissemination of false information related to public policy, emergencies, and social matters. According to the announcement, certain online accounts used AI tools and edited materials to produce and circulate content identified as false, including fabricated reports on extreme weather, public subsidies, lottery predictions, criminal incidents, and official programmes. The CAC stated that online platforms, under its guidance, implemented measures to monitor content, trace sources, and close accounts involved in the distribution of such information. A total of 2,210 accounts were handled for violations of applicable rules. The CAC indicated that monitoring activities would continue and called on users to take part in reporting mechanisms.
