Description

Ministry of Industry and Information Technology opened consultation on Technical Safety Requirements for Children's Smartwatches

On 14 May 2025, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) opened a public consultation on the draft mandatory national standard "Technical Safety Requirements for Children's Smartwatches" until 12 June 2025. The draft standard was developed under the national standardisation plan issued by the Standardization Administration of China. The draft sets out safety, cybersecurity, and data protection requirements for smartwatches intended for children aged 3 to 14. The standard includes physical safety provisions on flammability, chemical composition, electromagnetic radiation, and battery integrity, alongside cybersecurity requirements for software updates, password protection, biometric authentication, and default app permissions. It also prohibits pre-installed generative AI voice assistants, restricts access to high-risk apps, and mandates guardian consent for personal data processing.
