Canada: Office of the Privacy Commissioner opened consultation on Children's Privacy Code including data protection regulation

Description

Office of the Privacy Commissioner opened consultation on Children's Privacy Code including data protection regulation

On 12 May 2025, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) launched an exploratory consultation, open until 5 August 2025, to inform the development of a children’s privacy code under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). The consultation focuses on data protection regulation concerning the collection, use, disclosure, retention, and safeguarding of children’s personal information. The proposed code is intended to clarify obligations related to meaningful consent, data minimisation, privacy by default, and limitations on certain data practices. The OPC states that the initiative is informed by international regulatory developments and is intended to support the ability of children to exercise their privacy rights in digital environments.
