EU and Japan issued Digital Partnership Council Joint Statement including cybersecurity regulation

On 12 May 2025, the European Union and Japan reaffirmed an agreement for tech and digital cooperation at their third Digital Partnership Council, which included commitments to strengthen cybersecurity regulation. Both sides exchanged updates on regulatory developments, such as the EU’s Cyber Resilience Act and Japan’s JC-STAR IoT labelling scheme, focusing on product security and critical infrastructure protection. Cooperation was also advanced on global cybersecurity guidance for software bill of materials (SBOM) and capacity-building initiatives in the Indo-Pacific region. Discussions continue on securing submarine cable infrastructure and improving cyber resilience through joint projects and knowledge sharing, with the next EU-Japan Cyber Dialogue scheduled to take place in Brussels.
