European Union: European Commission issued decision specifying that Facebook Marketplace no longer qualifies as a core platform service under Digital Markets Act

Description

European Commission issued decision specifying that Facebook Marketplace no longer qualifies as a core platform service under Digital Markets Act

On 23 April 2025, the European Commission closed its investigation into Facebook Marketplace, concluding that it no longer meets the criteria for designation under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The decision was issued after Meta, the parent company, submitted a request on 5 March 2024 to reassess the designation of Marketplace under the DMA. The Commission determined that Facebook Marketplace no longer meets the criteria under the DMA for being considered a core platform service. In 2024, Marketplace reportedly maintained fewer than 10’000 business users, which falls below the thresholds established by DMA.
