Description

European Commission fined Apple EUR 500 million for violating Digital Markets Act's anti-steering provisions by restricting app developers from directing users to alternative purchasing options outside App Store

On 23 April 2025, the European Commission fined Apple EUR 500 million for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The Commission determined that Apple's practices in restricting app developers from directing users to alternative purchasing options outside of the App Store constituted a violation of the DMA's anti-steering provisions. The decision noted that Apple failed to ensure that app developers can freely inform consumers about alternative purchasing avenues that may offer enhanced choice and competitive pricing. Consequently, consumers were unable to fully benefit from potentially cheaper or alternative offers due to Apple's imposed restrictions. In addition to the fine, the Commission has mandated Apple to eliminate the existing technical and commercial barriers preventing developers from steering consumers towards alternative options. The decision also obligates Apple to cease any future conduct that would have similar effects.
