European Union: European Commission closes consultation on guidelines on general-purpose AI models under the AI Act

On 22 May 2025, the European Commission closes its consultation on its draft guidelines related to general-purpose AI models under the AI Act. This initiative invites stakeholders to inform accessible and transparent rules for general-purpose AI (GPAI) models within the European Union (EU). The guidelines aim to clarify the definitions and obligations outlined in the AI Act, particularly those applicable to entities providing GPAI models. Key focus areas include determining the nature of general-purpose AI models, identifying providers, and understanding market placement actions. The guidelines will also advise on compliance facilitation through the AI Office and explain the possibility of reducing administrative demands by adhering to the prospective Code of Practice.
