Sao Paulo Consumer Protection Authority issued recommendations on the fixed-odds betting market

On 10 April 2025, the São Paulo Consumer Protection Authority issued recommendations concerning the regulation of the fixed-odds betting market in Brazil. The recommendations sent to the Prizes and Betting Secretariat of the Ministry of Finance (SPA-MF) emphasised the necessity for strong consumer protection measures. These included ensuring transparency in the rules and risks associated with gaming and betting activities, given bettors' status as consumers under the Consumer Protection Code. The Authority also suggested removing illegal betting websites, establishing protections for consumers with compulsive gambling disorders, and creating effective barriers to protect children, adolescents, and the elderly.
