Description

European Data Protection Board opened consultation on guidelines on processing personal data through blockchain technologies

On 14 April 2025, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) opened a public consultation on the guidelines on the processing of personal data through blockchain technologies until 9 June 2025. The guidelines aim to support organisations to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) when using blockchain, emphasising the importance of implementing technical and organisational measures early in the design phase. The guidelines include assessing the roles and responsibilities of different actors, conducting Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) for high-risk processing, and ensuring the highest protection of individuals’ data. The guidelines also highlight the rights of individuals, especially regarding transparency, rectification, and erasure of personal data.
