China: Cyberspace Administration of China announced investigation into platforms over misinformation and privacy violations

On 7 April 2025, the Internet Information Office of the Cyberspace Administration of China announced an investigation into online platforms associated with the spread of misinformation and privacy violations within the “fan circle” community. The national-level investigation is part of ongoing content moderation efforts aimed at addressing issues related to user-generated content. The investigation focuses on the long-term removal and banning of accounts involved in disseminating unverified information. Platforms are instructed to enforce existing regulations, including the Regulations on the Ecological Governance of Internet Information Content and the Notice on Further Strengthening the Standardization of Online Information of Entertainment Stars. The investigation seeks to limit pan-entertainment content and support the development of a more regulated online environment.
