France: National Commission on Informatics and Liberty opened consultation on draft recommendation on use of location data from connected vehicles

On 25 March 2025, the National Commission on Informatics and Liberty (CNIL) initiated a public consultation, set to close on 20 May 2025, on a draft recommendation focused on location data usage by connected vehicles in the technological consumer goods sector. The draft offers guidance on common location-based services, including vehicle recovery, accident assistance, fleet management, theft prevention, and service optimisation. It aims to help industry actors implement the core principles of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), such as data minimisation and security. This national-level consultation aims to gather insights and feedback from stakeholders such as car manufacturers, fleet managers, telematics tool providers, and data integrators.
