Competition Commission of India initiates antitrust investigation against Apple regarding App Store

On 31 December 2021, the Competition Commission of India initiated an antitrust investigation regarding a potential abuse of dominance by Apple, with regards to the App Store (Case 24/2021). The Commission took a prima facie view that Apple violated Section 4 of the Competition Act, which covers the abuse of a dominant position. The focus of the investigation lies on the payment mechanism Apple imposes within the App Store, including a 30% commission and the thwarting of alternative in-app payment systems. The Director General will submit a report on the case within 60 days.
