Republic of Korea: Amendment to Network Act including establishment of the Defamation Dispute Mediation Committee was introduced to the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea

On 18 March 2025, an amendment to the Network Act (Act on Promotion of Information and Communication Network Utilisation and Information Protection) was introduced to the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea. The proposed amendment would establish the Defamation Dispute Mediation Committee as a body within the Korea Communications Standards Commission, composed of up to five members, including at least one qualified attorney. The Committee would be responsible for mediating disputes related to the dissemination of online information that may violate personal rights, such as defamation or invasion of privacy. The amendment would delineate the committee's organisational structure, procedures for the appointment and disqualification of members, and the mediation process, including application, review, timelines for resolution proposals, and conditions under which mediation may be refused or suspended.
