On 13 March 2025, the European Union (EU) and South Africa issued a joint declaration in Cape Town, reaffirming their strategic partnership. The EU expressed support for South Africa's G20 Presidency and committed to collaboration in trade, investment, technological cooperation, and sustainable development. The EU introduced the EUR 4.7 billion Global Gateway Investment Package, aimed at financing projects through grants, loans, and private sector contributions. The package includes initiatives for developing submarine and terrestrial fibre-optic cables, cloud and data infrastructure, and regulatory frameworks that support a people-centred digital transition. It also aims to promote trusted connectivity, with a focus on data protection, to enhance international cooperation and sustainable development.
