Republic of Korea: Supreme Court issued ruling upholding Personal Information Protection Commission's KRW 6.7 billion fine against Meta

Description

Supreme Court issued ruling upholding Personal Information Protection Commission's KRW 6.7 billion fine against Meta

On 13 March 2025, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Korea dismissed Meta's legal challenge against the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC). Meta sought to revoke a KRW 6.7 billion fine and associated corrective order for allegedly sharing the personal data of approximately 3.3 million South Korean Facebook users with around 10,000 external app operators without consent. This dismissal upholds the PIPC's 2020 decision. Consequently, Meta is mandated to comply with the corrective measures imposed by PIPC.
