United States of America: Attorney General reached settlement with Saturn Technologies following investigation into its data protection practices

Description

Attorney General reached settlement with Saturn Technologies following investigation into its data protection practices

On 7 March 2025, the Attorney General of the State of New York announced a settlement with Saturn Technologies, the developer of the Saturn app used by high school students, following an investigation into its data protection practices. The app, which enables students to create personal calendars, message others, and share social media accounts, was intended to restrict interactions with users from the same high school. However, the investigation found that Saturn Technologies did not sufficiently verify users' school emails or ages, allowing interactions between users from different schools. Under the settlement, Saturn Technologies will pay USD 650’000 in penalties and implement measures to strengthen user privacy. These include notifying users about verification updates, providing enhanced privacy options for users under 18, and ensuring that future statements about user safety are supported by evidence. The company will also limit the visibility of non-users information, allow teachers to block personal identifiers, delete retained contact books, and obtain informed consent from users under 18 for new terms.
