United Kingdom: Amendments to the Data (Use and Access) Bill including age requirement for social media were introduced into the House of Commons

Description

Amendments to the Data (Use and Access) Bill including age requirement for social media were introduced into the House of Commons

On 6 March 2025, a member of the House of Commons tabled an amendment to the UK GDPR that would raise the age of consent for social media data processing from 13 to 16, specifically for social media platforms. The amendment would apply to any online service that allows users to create profiles, interact with others and share user-generated content with a wider audience. The amendment would not apply to platforms used exclusively for education, health or welfare services, such as learning management systems in accredited educational institutions, NHS digital services and mental health support applications, where the processing of personal data is necessary for the provision of the service.
