On 16 May 2005, the Law on the Protection of Competition and the Prohibition of Monopolistic Practices (promulgated by Law No. 3 of 2005) entered into force. The law establishes competition authority governance in Articles 11-15, creating the Authority for the Protection of Competition and the Prohibition of Monopolistic Practices (known as the Egyptian Competition Authority, or ECA). The ECA is granted powers to investigate anti-competitive practices, receive notifications, and enforce compliance with the law.
