Description

Amendment to the Federal Road Traffic Act including automated driving was introduced to the National Council

On 9 March 2022, an amendment to the Road Traffic Act (SVG) aimed at promoting environmentally friendly technologies and digital transformation in road traffic was introduced to the National Council. The proposal would enable automated driving by allowing the Federal Council to determine the extent to which drivers may be relieved of their duties and the conditions under which driverless vehicles may operate under supervision on designated routes. The Federal Roads Authority (ASTRA) would also be empowered to approve and financially support trials of automated vehicles. In addition, the amendments would allow vehicles powered by electricity or hydrogen to exceed standard length and weight limits, ensuring that their introduction does not reduce cargo capacity.
