Description

Law No. 180 of 2018 on Press, Media, and the Supreme Council for Media Regulation including content moderation regulation entered into force

On 18 August 2020, Law No. 180 of 2018 on Press, Media, and the Supreme Council for Media Regulation (SCMR) entered into force. Entities, institutions, press, media outlets, and websites were required to comply with the provisions of the law and its executive regulation within six months of the enforcement of the executive regulation. The law prohibits media outlets and electronic platforms from publishing or broadcasting content that incites violence, hatred, or discrimination, or that violates public morals or national security (Article 19). It also mandates the removal of such content and grants the SCMR the authority to take appropriate measures, including blocking or suspending websites or accounts that violate these provisions. The law requires platforms to correct false information within three days of a request and allows for judicial review of decisions made by the SCMR.
