Act on frontier artificial intelligence models and whistleblower protections including transparency requirements (SB 53) was introduced to California Senate

On 7 January 2025, the Act on frontier artificial intelligence (AI) models and whistle blower protections (SB 53) was introduced to the California Senate. The Act establishes essential safeguards for developing AI frontier models and enhances the state's capacity to utilise AI effectively. The Act proposes the creation of CalCompute, a public cloud computing cluster within the Government Operations Agency, to support the safe, ethical, and equitable development of AI. A consortium will develop a framework for its establishment, focusing on research, innovation, and access to computing resources, with a report due to the Legislature by 2027.
