On 4 March 2025, the Artificial Intelligence (Regulation) Bill was introduced to the House of Lords, outlining regulatory principles for the AI Authority to ensure AI systems are safe, transparent, fair, accountable, and contestable. Companies developing or using AI would be required to comply with data protection, privacy, and intellectual property laws. The AI Authority would also collaborate with regulators to establish regulatory sandboxes, enabling companies to test AI innovations in controlled, real-world conditions. It would support businesses in identifying appropriate consumer protection safeguards, ensuring that tests have clear objectives and are conducted on a small scale.
