On 1 March 2025, the regulation authorising the use of automated vehicles came into effect. This regulation follows a revision of the law in spring 2023, which created the framework for the integration of automated driving technologies on Swiss roads. The regulation introduces three use cases. Firstly, drivers of automated vehicles on motorways will now be able to use a motorway pilot function, which allows them to release the steering device and stop constant traffic and vehicle monitoring when the function is activated. However, they must be prepared to retake control should the automation system require it. Secondly, driverless vehicles will be allowed to operate on officially approved routes, with approval being determined by the cantons. The Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) provides guidelines for assessing these routes and offers an advisory group for cantons to consult. These driverless vehicles must be monitored by an operator in a control centre, who can intervene if the vehicle encounters a situation it cannot handle autonomously. Finally, automated parking without the presence of a driver is permitted in designated and signposted parking garages and car parks. The cantons or municipalities are responsible for identifying suitable parking areas and can rely on ASTRA's guidelines or advisory group to evaluate proposed parking areas.
