On 12 February 2025, the Data Privacy and Online Surveillance Act was introduced at the Vermont House of Representatives. The Act seeks to enhance consumer protection relating to personal data. It applies to businesses that process significant amounts of consumer data or derive substantial revenue from data sales. It imposes obligations including limiting data collection, obtaining meaningful consent and protecting sensitive data. It also provides consumers with the right to confirm, correct, or delete their data, opt out of targeted advertising, and receive clear privacy notices. It also provides that the Attorney General will oversee enforcement.
