Description

Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775) including consumer protection authority governance entered into force

On 9 January 2009, Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775) entered into force. The Act outlines several measures for consumer protection within the telecommunications sector. The National Communications Authority (NCA) is mandated to periodically conduct research to ascertain public opinion on the performance of service providers and network operators, with results published to inform consumers. The NCA must also establish effective arrangements for consulting with consumers and addressing their complaints or concerns. Additionally, a Consumer Code is to be prepared, either independently or in conjunction with the Industry Forum, detailing procedures for meeting consumer requirements, handling complaints, and protecting consumer information. This code is to be published on the NCA's website.
