Description

Economic Community of West African States adopted Regional Competition Policy Framework

In 2007, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) adopted the Regional Competition Policy Framework (RCPF) to create a cohesive approach to competition law among its member states. The RCPF is designed to promote fair market practices, enhance economic efficiency, and safeguard consumer welfare by addressing anti-competitive behaviours such as price fixing, market dominance, and state-induced distortions. It underscores the necessity of establishing a regional competition authority to oversee and enforce these rules, ensuring their consistent application across the region. Additionally, the framework emphasises the importance of capacity-building initiatives to support effective implementation and enforcement, aiming to foster economic integration and competitiveness within ECOWAS.
