European Commission launched InvestAI Initiative to finance AI gigafactories

On 11 February 2025, the European Union launched the InvestAI initiative intending to mobilise up to EUR 200 billion (USD 206.5 billion) in public-private investments in AI. For this, the Commission announced a European fund of EUR 20 billion (USD 20.6 billion) to finance AI gigafactories. A notion first introduced in January 2024, these gigafactories are open access and will provide services to private and public users. Specifically, the Commission announced the new AI gigafactories will train complex and large AI models for breakthroughs in specific domains such as medicine, industry or science. The financial resources will come from the Digital Europe Programme, Horizon Europe, and the InvestEU programme.
