Concluded joint investigation by Canadian data protection authorities into Clearview AI

On 2 February 2021, the joint investigation on the use of facial recognition technology by Clearview AI by the data protection authorities of Canada, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta concluded. The authorities found that Clearview AI's facial recognition system pursued the collection, use and disclosure of personal data without the necessary consent according to the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). For this reason, the authorities asked Clearview to cease offering its facial recognition services in Canada and collecting images from Canadian individuals.
