Description

African Union adopted Interoperability Framework for Digital ID

On 11 December 2023, the African Union adopted the AU Interoperability Framework for Digital ID, outlining a continental approach supporting interoperable and inclusive digital identity systems for secure access to services across member states. The framework sets common requirements and standards for digital credentials, aimed at enhancing economic integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement. The framework is structured into three phases. Phase 1 focuses on legal and governance alignment, cybersecurity, and national data infrastructure. Phase 2 introduces the Interoperable Digital Credential for Identity (IDC-ID) with standardised security and interoperability protocols. Phase 3 implements remote authentication using digital wallets, federated ID providers, or cryptographic signatures.
