Bill amending Civil Code to address Artificial Intelligence defences in civil actions (AB 316) was introduced at State Assembly

On 24 January 2025, the Bill amending Civil Code to address Artificial Intelligence (AI) defences in civil actions was introduced at the State Assembly. The Bill applies to developers and users of AI systems and services. It prohibits defendants from asserting a defence that artificial intelligence autonomously caused harm in civil actions. Specifically, in cases where AI is alleged to have caused injury, the defendant cannot claim the harm was due to the AI’s autonomous actions.
