On 30 January 2019, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA), 2018 was signed by the President and entered into force. The Act applies to all commercial activities within Nigeria and those affecting the country, covering Nigerian citizens, residents, and companies operating abroad if their activities impact the Nigerian market. It established the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), an independent body tasked with promoting and maintaining competitive markets, protecting consumer interests, regulating mergers, and addressing anti-competitive practices. Additionally, the FCCPC advises the government on competition and consumer protection matters. The Act also creates the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal, responsible for adjudicating disputes arising from the Act's enforcement, reviewing FCCPC decisions, and imposing penalties. The Tribunal consists of a chairman, who must have at least ten years of legal experience, and six other members with relevant expertise, operating nationwide to uphold consumer rights and competitive practices.
