Mexico: Government announced Reforms to Data Protection and Transparency Laws including transfer of power from INAI to the Anti-Corruption and Good Governance Secretariat

Description

Government announced Reforms to Data Protection and Transparency Laws including transfer of power from INAI to the Anti-Corruption and Good Governance Secretariat

On 31 January 2025, the government of Mexico announced its intention to submit a series of reforms to the Congress of the Union. The reform involves the transfer of 80% of the INAI's current responsibilities to the Anti-Corruption and Good Governance Secretariat, which will operate using only 35% of the INAI's previous budget. The reforms will entail the repeal of the extant Federal Law of Transparency and Access to Public Information and the introduction of new general laws governing transparency, access to public information, and personal data protection. The task of ensuring the public's right to access information will be assumed by a newly established decentralised body, Transparency for the People, while dedicated organs across various government levels will oversee personal data protection.
