Bangladesh: Information and Communication Technology Division closes consultation on Personal Data Protection Act including data protection authority governance

On 28 January 2025, the Information and Communication Technology Division closed a consultation on the Personal Data Protection Act including data protection authority governance. The Act establishes the Bangladesh Data Protection Authority to oversee and enforce these data protection regulations. This authority is tasked with monitoring and enforcing the act, promoting public awareness, and advising the government on data protection measures. It has the power to call for information, conduct inspections, and perform audits to ensure compliance. The authority is also responsible for issuing guidelines, encouraging the development of codes of conduct, and providing information to data subjects. Additionally, it can approve certification mechanisms and conduct its activities independently.
