Attorney General adopted order requiring Facebook to remove deepfake content about Minister of Finance

On 9 January 2025, Brazil's Attorney General's Office (AGU) issued an extrajudicial notification ordering Facebook to remove a video manipulated with artificial intelligence (AI) falsely depicting Finance Minister Fernando Haddad making statements about non-existent taxes within 24 hours. The AGU stated that the video, which showed abrupt cuts and discrepancies in lip movement and voice timbre, contravened Facebook's Terms of Use and Community Standards by disseminating disinformation that could interfere with political processes. The notification also requested the platform to label the content as AI-generated if removal was not feasible.
