ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand sign FTA Upgrade including consumer protection provisions

On 21 August 2023, the Upgrade to the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) was signed. The agreement introduces legally enforceable consumer protection rules under its Electronic Commerce Chapter, requiring parties to adopt frameworks addressing fraudulent online commercial practices. The agreement also includes obligations for parties to safeguard personal data, ensuring secure handling of consumers' information. The Upgrade also includes commitments to expedite customs clearance of perishable goods within six hours, reducing risks to consumer goods during humanitarian crises.
