On 16 January 2024, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) adopted amendments to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule (COPPA) to strengthen protections for children’s personal data. The amendments introduce requirements for operators of websites and online services, including mandatory opt-in consent for targeted advertising or third-party data sharing, compliance with data retention and deletion protocols, and enhanced transparency for FTC-approved Safe Harbor programs. The updated rule also expands the definition of personal information to include biometric data and government-issued identifiers.
