United States of America: Attorney General’s Office adopted advisory on application of existing California laws to Artificial Intelligence

On 13 January 2025, the California Attorney General’s Office (AGO) adopted a legal advisory on the application of state laws to artificial intelligence (AI). The advisory outlines how existing consumer protection, civil rights, competition and privacy legislation govern AI development and deployment. The advisory stresses compliance with laws including the Unfair Competition Law, False Advertising Law, and civil rights protections to prevent bias and deceptive practices. It highlights the need for transparency and validation in AI. It also highlighted that upcoming laws including on training data transparency (AB 2013) will increase AI transparency.
