Brazil: National Prosecutor's Office for the Defense of Democracy opened investigation into Meta's updated content moderation policies

On 10 January 2025, the Brazil National Prosecutor's Office for the Defense of Democracy (PNDD) issued an extrajudicial notification to Meta, requesting clarifications on its recent policy changes regarding content moderation. The request follows Meta's announcement to end fact-checking on Instagram and Facebook, replacing it with a “Community Notes” system and updates to its guidelines, allowing broader discussions on immigration, gender, and sexual orientation. The PNDD requested details on Meta's measures to address gender-based violence, protection of minors, prevention of hate speech, and the effectiveness of the “Community Notes” system in countering misinformation. Meta is required to respond within 72 hours.
