On 7 January 2025, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) filed a lawsuit against Experian Information Solutions (Experian) in the United States District Court for the Central District of California, alleging multiple violations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Consumer Financial Protection Act (CFPA). The complaint asserts that Experian failed to conduct reasonable reinvestigations of consumer disputes, over-relied on furnishers' responses, provided inadequate notice to consumers regarding reinvestigation outcomes, and allowed previously deleted inaccurate information to be reinserted into consumer files. These practices are claimed to have caused substantial harm to consumers, leading the CFPB to seek injunctive relief, consumer redress, and the disgorgement of any ill-gotten gains by Experian.
