On 27 January 2025, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) closes the public consultation on the Report on Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance guidelines development. The guidelines would apply to AI stakeholders, including developers, deployers, and end-users across sectors such as healthcare, finance, and digital services. The report emphasises the need for a coordinated, whole-of-government strategy to ensure compliance and effective AI governance. It outlines a lifecycle approach addressing AI development, deployment, and long-term impacts. It also clarifies the roles and liabilities of stakeholders, such as data principals and providers. The report outlines a techno-legal strategy, combining legal frameworks with tools like blockchain, smart contracts, and compliance systems to enhance monitoring and mitigate risks. The report’s measures include watermarking, platform labelling, and content provenance mechanisms to combat risks like deepfakes. It also highlights recommendations to strengthen grievance mechanisms under the proposed Digital India Act.
