On 5 February 2025, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) closes a public consultation of the consent order against accessiBe over misrepresentation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered web accessibility tool. The order highlighted that accessiBe markets accessWidget, a web accessibility software, claimed that it can make any website compliant with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). However, these claims were false, misleading, or unsubstantiated, as accessWidget did not ensure all user websites met WCAG standards. Additionally, it was highlighted that accessiBe deceptively presented third-party articles and reviews as independent, impartial opinions, without disclosing its material connections to the reviewers, violating the FTC Act. The order prohibits accessiBe from claiming that its products, including accessWidget's AI, can ensure or maintain WCAG compliance without evidence, bars the misrepresentation of product features and endorsements, and mandates clear disclosure of any material connections between endorsers and the company. Additionally, accessiBe is required to pay USD 1 million to the FTC for consumer refunds.
