Description

Announced lawsuit against Rogers Communications for misleading unlimited data claims

On 23 December 2024, the Competition Bureau of Canada initiated legal proceedings against Rogers Communications Inc. under the Competition Act, alleging that the company had engaged in deceptive advertising practices pertaining to its Infinite wireless phone plans. The Bureau alleges that Rogers marketed its mobile data plans as "unlimited" or "infinite" while, in reality, implementing data caps and throttling speeds by over 99% once the caps were exceeded, thereby misleading consumers regarding the nature of the plans. The Commissioner's legal action seeks a declaration of misconduct, a prohibition on the continuation of similar practices, notifications to consumers, financial penalties, and the potential for refunds to affected customers. The investigation determined that Rogers' extensive advertising campaign, using various media, created a false impression of unlimited data despite hidden limitations and inadequate disclaimers.
