Republic of Korea: Opened consultation for guidelines on personal information transmission in telecommunications

On 24 December 2024, the Personal Information Protection Commission of the Republic of Korea (PIPC) initiated a consultation on the proposed guidelines for the transmission of personal information in the telecommunications sector until 13 January 2025. The guidelines are derived from the Personal Information Protection Act and establish the criteria for individuals to request the transfer of their personal information, including customer, subscription, usage, billing and payment details. The objective of the guidelines is to empower individuals with data portability rights, thereby enabling access to customised services such as optimised telecom plans. The guidelines stipulate that data transmission is permitted exclusively through authorised institutions and is valid for a period of up to one year from the date of transmission request.
