Description

National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority's regulatory framework for foreign satellite operators providing telecom services to earth stations terminals within Egypt entered into force

On 9 July 2024, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority's (NTRA) regulatory framework for foreign satellite operators providing telecommunications services to earth station terminals within Egypt was implemented. Satellite operators had until 8 July 2024 to adjust their operations to comply with this framework. Operators and their distributors cannot operate without obtaining a permit from NTRA. The framework requires any entity seeking to provide or lease satellite capacity within the country to obtain the necessary licences and permits. This requirement applies to both direct satellite operators and resellers facilitating communication services via satellites. The licensing process involves submitting detailed information about the company, its satellite infrastructure and the specific frequency bands to be utilised. Operators must pay an annual fee of USD 1'000 and provide a financial guarantee of USD 2'000. The licence duration is five years, renewable for additional five-year periods with a renewal request submitted at least six months before expiration.
