Australia: Issued eSafety Commissioner regulatory guidance for compliance with Online Safety Industry Standard 2024 for relevant electronic services

On 13 November 2024, the eSafety Commissioner published guidance to support providers of Relevant Electronic Services to comply with the Online Safety Industry Standard 2024, which comes into effect on 22 December 2024. The standard regulates relevant electronic services and mandates that these services, including dating sites, online games, and messaging services, implement measures to eliminate child sexual abuse and pro-terror material. This also includes generative AI-based "nudify apps" that create explicit content without safeguards. The guidance outlines the regulatory scope of the standard, obligations for service providers, compliance procedures, penalties for non-compliance, and alignment with broader frameworks.
