Adoption of Information Technology Rules 2021 including requirement of appointing local compliance and grievance officers

The India Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology adopted the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 which include the requirement for "significant social media intermediaries" and news media content providers to appoint employees who are resident in India as Chief Compliance Officers (responsible for ensuring compliance with the Rules), nodal contact persons (for continuous coordination with law enforcement agencies), and Resident Grievance Officer (that must respond to every grievance within 15 days).
