On 26 September 2022, the National Information Technology Development Agency's (NITDA) Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries, establishing a comprehensive digital policy framework to regulate the digital ecosystem, entered into force. The Code applies to all interactive computer service platforms and internet intermediaries operating in Nigeria, mandating compliance with Nigerian laws, prompt responses to legal notices, and the removal of harmful or unlawful content within 48 hours. Platforms must provide complaint mechanisms, exercise due diligence, and disclose content creators' identities when required. Additional obligations for large platforms include local incorporation, appointing a liaison officer, and providing human supervision for automated tools. The Code also includes measures to combat disinformation and misinformation, such as research collaboration and media literacy programmes.
